Following Lap-Band surgery, some patients may start experiencing gas and abdominal pain. Because the band changes the natural process of the digestive tract, some digestive issues are common, including gassiness, bloating, and cramping. Many patients are able to get used to the increased gassiness and find that it is a side effect of the band that they are able to tolerate. Others, however, may experience severe abdominal pain and discomfort that can interfere with sleep or other daily activities. Some patients may also experience pain in the shoulder immediately following their Lap-Band procedure due to gases used during the surgery. This type of gas pain is usually temporary.

Lap-Band patients often ask what foods to eat during the soft or "mushy" stage of their diet. During this phase, which lasts about two weeks, it's important to choose foods that will easily pass through your band. One-cup meals three times a day is usually sufficient. Because only a small portion of liquids can be tolerated, it's best to stay hydrated with lots of water and to limit foods such as broth, skin milk, and tea. However, as long as the consistency of your food is soft and mushy, you can experiment with different foods and flavors.

Weight-loss surgery patients are happier and healthier after surgery than they were prior, reports a survey out of Canada.

The Weight Loss Benefits survey, sponsored by Slimband, found that weight-loss surgery patients reported significant improvements in self-esteem, energy levels, and quality of life following their procedures.
